The arranged marriage of Philip and Elizabeth Jennings grows more passionate and genuine by the day, but as the pressures and demands of the job grow heavier, the personal toll becomes almost too exhausting to bear, especially when it comes to protecting their American-born children, Paige and Henry. Co-starring Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys,"The Americans" is a period drama about the complex marriage of two KGB spies posing as Americans in suburban Washington, D.C., during the Reagan administration. ![]()

Taken on December 8, 1980, Leibovitz’s photo of the former Beatle was shot just hours before his death. Wenner has credited her with making many Rolling Stone covers collector’s items, most notably an issue that featured a nude John Lennon curled around his fully clothed wife, Yoko Ono. While with Rolling Stone, Leibovitz developed her trademark technique, which involved the use of bold primary colors and surprising poses. Her position with the magazine afforded her the opportunity to accompany the Rolling Stones band on their 1975 international tour. ![]() Within two years, the 23-year-old Leibovitz was promoted to chief photographer – a title she would hold for the next 10 years. Impressed with Leibovitz’s portfolio, editor Jann Wenner offered her a job as a staff photographer. In 1967, Leibovitz enrolled at the San Francisco Art Institute, where (although initially studying painting) she developed a love for photography.Īfter living briefly on an Israeli kibbutz, Leibovitz returned to the U.S., in 1970, and applied for a job with the start-up rock music magazine Rolling Stone. ![]() She was one of the six children born to Sam, an Air Force lieutenant, and Marilyn Leibovitz, a modern dance instructor. The challenges facing contemporary Africa make no sense in the absence of an analysis that digs into the slave trade, colonialism, and the arbitrary division of the continent into alleged nation-states, many of which lack the resources to stabilize and advance. ![]() When one looks at such patterns, one inevitably returns to the continent of Africa. Yet, when one looks at planet Earth, we see global patterns in the manner in which the pandemic has spread and brought disaster, patterns that date back to the fifteenth century, patterns that are rooted in slavery and colonialism and, ultimately, in the construction of so-called race and racist oppression. ![]() Within the Global North, there are stark divisions over who is able to get access to the vaccine and who is not, not to mention which populations are sickening and dying disproportionately-divisions that are particularly rooted in oppressions based on class, race, and nationality. It is not that people in the so-called Global North-Canada, the United States, the European Union, Japan-have been able to defy the pandemic and secure health. The question of who has been able to obtain the vaccine and who has not who is able to produce the vaccine, and who is constrained by corporate patent restrictions. The Covid-19 pandemic has both illustrated and dramatized the ongoing North/South divide on planet Earth. ![]() 5/24/2023 0 Comments Gogol the namesake![]() However, I can still identify with Gogol's struggle for self-identity-who can't? Not all of us change or names, but most of us, at least once in our lives, feel lost and unsure of who we are. ![]() ![]() The birth and development of Gogol Ganguli, a second-generation Indian in the United States, fascinates me because I grew up in a household so different from the Bengali culture Lahiri depicts here. This is a story that captivates because it becomes so personal. The Namesake has rough edges not visible in Lahiri's later efforts, but the same magic that so impressed me in her short stories is there even in this earlier novel. Almost a year and a half later, I return to Lahiri, this time in novel form. However, Eliot’s tales were illustrated in the subsequent editions that appeared in her lifetime. The publisher, George Smith, saw an opportunity to enhance Eliot’s appeal by endowing her historical tale with images, but this was the only occasion when the author was directly involved in the discourse of the 1860s as she struggled to manipulate Leighton’s treatment of her text, a process, as several critics have observed, in which she ultimately shared authorship with the artist. The exception to this rule is Romola, which was published in 1862–3 in the Cornhill Magazine, with imposing designs by Frederic Leighton.
